2021 summer staff now in place for County agriculture department

The County of Grande Prairie’s agriculture department has brought in 21 temporary staff this summer.

Ag. Fieldman Sonja Raven says the temporary staff group includes mower and sprayer operators.

“And then we have a slew of weed inspectors. They cover the entire county looking at various properties and following up on if there are weed complaints or concerns from previous years and just trying to educate people about noxious weeds.”

Raven says there is also a rural extension officer that helps with extension projects.

About 80 per cent of the people in this group are re-hired each year.

Raven adds about 70 per cent of the group is students.

“We have a couple that are in technology. There are some that are teachers, nurses. We have actually inspired some of our students to go into agriculture and they probably wouldn’t have if they hadn’t had a job here.”

Raven says some of the summer staff will stay on until the end of August, others will be there until mid-October.

The County’s agriculture department has 10 full-time employees.
