Grande Prairie records 16 new COVID-19 cases, 21 recoveries

The City of Grande Prairie added 16 new cases of COVID-19 and 21 recoveries for Sunday, May 23, bringing the active case total in the city down by five to 167.

Four new cases and three recoveries were recorded in the County of Grande Prairie for Sunday. There are now 66 active cases there.

There were 452 new cases of COVID-19 identified across Alberta following the completion of 5,085 tests, resulting in an 8.8 per cent test positivity rate.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day May 23 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 3,837 cases (167 active, 3,644 recovered, 26 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 1,339 cases (66 active, 1,268 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 576 cases (31 active, 541 recovered, four deaths)
  • Birch Hills County: 30 cases (five active, 25 recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 80 cases (one active, 79 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 29 cases (three active, 26 recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 146 cases (two active, 134 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 709 cases (four active, 693 recovered, 12 deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 354 cases (three active, 350 recovered, one death)
  • M.D. of Peace: 669 cases (12 active, 657 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 131 cases (13 active, 117 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 135 cases (one active, 133 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 308 cases (one active, 306 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 135 cases (12 active, 123 recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 1,848 cases (132 active, 1,691 recovered, 25 deaths)

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 in Alberta have decreased by 12 to 569 as of Sunday night, while the number of ICU patients dropped by one to 161.

In the North Zone, 62 people are in hospital (down four), 12 of whom are in intensive care (down three).

There were seven new deaths reported to Alberta Health from across the province over the last 24 hours. A total of 2,183 Albertans have now died as a result of COVID-19 complications.

The City of Grande Prairie now has 33.7 per cent of its population with at least one dose of vaccine. Another 365 people have been reported to have had their first shot, bringing the total number of people in Grande Prairie to get at least the first dose to 25,282.

In the County, 74 more people have been reported to have their first dose. In the east and west County region combined, 11,549 people have received at least one dose, equalling 34.4 per cent of the population.

Across Alberta, 25,224 doses were given out on Sunday, bringing the total number of Albertans who have received at least one dose of vaccine to 2,532,143.

That total means 48.7 per cent of Albertans are immunized with at least one dose. Alberta Health adds 7.9 per cent of the population is fully vaccinated.
