Seniors celebrated throughout Alberta during Seniors’ Week

Jun 8, 2021 | 5:00 AM

This week is Seniors’ Week across Alberta.

Sheri Dennis, the Executive Director of the Grande Prairie Seniors Outreach Program, says the purpose of the week is to recognize seniors’ for all the hard work they do in our community.

“We take a week to recognize seniors for all the good things they’ve done in our community and what they’ve done to build our city and our province. It’s so nice to be able to take a week to recognize them for all they’ve done.”

In previous years, seniors’ have been celebrated with concerts, events and other activities so people can say thank you. However, with COVID-19 restrictions still being enforced by the provincial government, many events have been put off for another year.

While restrictions remain in place this year, the provincial government has given a list of ways you can celebrate Seniors’ Week with a senior.

This can include hosting a family dinner online, hosting a virtual game night with family and friends, or even writing letters and sending cards.

People are also encouraged to offer assistance to a senior when needed.

Dennis tells EverythingGP that if there is anyone who deserved the love and attention over the last year and a half, it’s the seniors’ who’ve been through a lot.

“For the last year, we’ve asked our seniors to stay home and stay safe. I think we are all looking forward to getting together soon and seeing one and other again. Hopefully next year we’ll be open and able to celebrate together.”

“I am so proud of the seniors and what they’ve done, and I look forward to celebrating with them in the near future.”
