Alberta’s hot spot: Grande Prairie records province’s top temp during heat wave

Jul 6, 2021 | 6:56 AM

The historic heat wave that moved through Alberta last week made Grande Prairie the hottest location in the province at one point.

Exactly one week ago Tuesday, on June 29, temperatures reached a stifling 41.5 degrees at the Grande Prairie Airport, which the hottest temperature recorded between June 25 and July 2 in all of Alberta.

That daily high was the hottest temperature ever recorded in the Swan City, beating the record set the day prior of 38.4 degrees.

Previous to the historic heatwave, Grande Prairie’s record high temperature was 35.6 degrees, reached on July 22, 2006.

While the heat was staggering, it was just under two degrees shy of the all-time record in Alberta, which was set on July 21, 1931 at the Bassano Dam in southern Alberta when the mercury reached 43.3 degrees.

The heat, though not as extreme, is forecasted to return to the Grande Prairie area this week. Environment Canada is calling for a high of 30 on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, before cooling slightly heading into the weekend.
