Crops drying out before record-breaking heat says provincial report
The province’s latest crop report says dry weather was already taking a toll on crops before the record-breaking heat last week.
The report dated June 28 says 65.8 per cent of the crops in this area were rated in good to excellent condition. That was down from 73.1 per cent on June 15. It is also below the five-year average of 70.4 per cent and the ten-year average of 71 per cent.
The breakdown by crop in good to excellent condition is 58.7 per cent for barley, 61.5 for oats, 62.4 for peas, 66.2 for canola, and 69.4 for wheat.
Surface soil moisture was 42 per cent good or excellent, a ten-point drop from the week prior. Sub-surface moisture was at 47 per cent good or excellent, down five points.
