Story Walk program returns to Muskoseepi Park

Jul 6, 2021 | 2:07 PM

The popular Story Walk program has returned to Muskoseepi Park for the summer.

The Story Walk was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont, and is a program used to keep children’s minds active during the summer months when many stop reading because school is out.

Morgan Cole, the Community Coordinator for Frontier College, says they adopted the program last year, and it has become very popular in Grande Prairie.

“It’s basically an innovative way for adults and children to enjoy reading while being physically active outdoors,” said Cole.

“Last summer was the first summer we did the program in Muskoseepi and it was very successful. We had almost 200 surveys completed and the feedback was very positive.”

Staff at Frontier College cut the pages out of old children’s books, laminate them and attach them onto signs.

These signs are then placed in order on a path in Muskoseepi Park for people to follow along.

“It kept kids really engaged,” said Cole. We have questions on each page as well to make sure that kids and parents could engage critically with the book and connect with one and other. It was a really fun way for families to get outside.”

Last year at Muskoseepi Park, Frontier College only put up two children’s stories throughout the summer. However, because of the growing popularity, Cole says they plan on adding a new story every week throughout this summer.

The signs will stay up daily until 7:00 p.m.

Initially, the plan with the signs was to keep them up 24/7, however, because of vandalism in 2020, a decision was made to remove the signs every night.
