Smoky air expected into weekend; no big impacts on air quality so far

Environment Canada says we can expect to see smoke in the air from wildfires in BC into the weekend in the Peace Country

Meteorologist Justin Shelley says air quality has not been impacted that much.

“Much of that smoke has remained higher up in the atmosphere. However, we are monitoring it closely and air quality statements may be possible if the pollutants mix down to the surface and that air quality reduces.”

Peace Airshed Zone Association executive director Elizabeth Bell says her group is monitoring the air closely.

“We haven’t seen it (the air quality health index) go up past four or five which is in the moderate range for air quality. Generally, we enjoy very good air quality in this area.”

Shelley says the models they use say the air quality risk should be moderate for the next day or so.

“However, air quality like this, especially with smoke in the area, could change rapidly. So, (we will be) monitoring the conditions and if the air quality diminishes, air quality statements may be issued for the region.”

Bell says anyone with a respiratory illness, seniors, and small kids will be the first to feel the impacts of poor air quality.

“Most often, when we are still at four or five, closing the windows, turning off vents that bring air from outside should reduce the risk and (we should) be able to maintain a healthier air quality indoors.”

Bell also recommends putting off more strenuous outdoor activities.

She adds anyone dealing with respiratory distress should go to the emergency room or call Health Link at 811.
