Court update: Trial dates set in fatal fire, armed robbery and forcible confinement cases

Jul 19, 2021 | 5:30 AM

Alberta Justice says a trial date has been set for a man charged after a house fire in Paddle Prairie that left two people dead.

The trial for Dallas Cardinal will take place April 7, 2022, in High Level. Cardinal has pleaded not guilty and elected trial by provincial court judge.

High Level RCMP said at the time that they and the High Level Fire Department were called out just before 3:30 a.m. on January 5, 2021.

A witness told police two people were unaccounted for and gave information that led Mounties to conclude the fire was suspicious.

A 62-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman died in the fire.

A suspect was located at a nearby home and had to be airlifted out for medical treatment.

Cardinal was charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death and one of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

Trial dates in armed robbery, forcible confinement cases

Alberta Justice says trial dates have been set for the two people charged after a report of an armed robbery and forcible confinement at Horse Lake First Nation.

The trial for Tyler Justin Horseman and Brayden Michael Morrison is set for May 11 through 13, 2022 in Grande Prairie court.

Both have elected trial by provincial court judge.

Grande Prairie and Beaverlodge RCMP said at the time they got the report of an armed robbery and forcible confinement February 18, 2021.

Two suspects were arrested four days later, one after the search of a home, the other after a vehicle sped away from an attempted traffic stop and got stuck in a field.

Both Horseman and Morrison are facing charges that include robbery with a firearm, forcible confinement, and possession of a prohibited weapon.

September sentencing in weapons, stolen property case

Alberta Justice says a man who pleaded guilty to weapons charges in May will be sentenced in September.

Thomas Christopher Burt was scheduled to stand trial May 24. Instead, he pleaded guilty to reduced charges of knowingly possessing a prohibited weapon and possession of stolen property and another count of possession of a prohibited firearm.

Sentencing has been set for September 7.

Burt was arrested on January 9 this year.

Beaverlodge RCMP say they got a report of a suspicious person camping on Crown land near Range Road 90 and Township Road 755.

Mounties found a vehicle that had been reported stolen in La Glace, and a trailer reported stolen from Beaverlodge, in December of 2020.

A search of the vehicle turned up three loaded guns, including a sawed-off shotgun, methamphetamine, ammunition, several sets of keys, and gas cards.

Burt had been facing 10 charges.

Charges in weapons case dismissed

Alberta Justice says all 30 charges against a man facing weapons and failure to comply counts after a traffic stop has been dismissed.

Andrew Haugseth had been due to stand trial July 14.

Grande Prairie RCMP said at the time that on September 22, 2020, they were making patrols just before midnight near 116 Avenue and 96 Street when they saw a suspicious vehicle parked at a gas station.

The driver was arrested for breaching curfew. Three rifles and a shotgun were seized after the vehicle was searched.

Stay of proceedings in stolen property case

Alberta Justice says there has been a stay of proceedings in a stolen property case against a Red Earth Creek woman.

The stay in the care against Evangelia Jordaine Noskey was entered June 24 in Peace River court.

Peace River RCMP said at the time that on September 22, 2019, members on patrol spotted a vehicle with a stolen license plate.

Their investigation turned up what they described as thousands of dollars worth of property that had been stolen from businesses and individuals. The items included stolen identity documents.

Noskey had been facing six counts of possession of property obtained by crime at the time of her arrest,

Last May, co-accused Kellie Laverne Ominayak pleaded guilty to seven of the ten charges she was facing and was given a 265-day jail sentence.
