Latest report shows under 20% of Peace Region crop in good condition

Jul 20, 2021 | 1:45 PM

The July 13 Alberta crop report says 18.1 per cent of the crop in the Peace Country was in good or excellent condition as of that date.

That compares to 65.8 per cent as of June 28.

That time period coincides with the time this area had record-breaking heat and little to no rain.

The five-year average is 69.9 per cent good to excellent condition. The 10-year average is 67.2

The report says crops were showing signs of extreme heat stress and that crop development was well ahead of normal. Grasshoppers were also becoming a concern.

Eighty-one per cent of haying had been completed as of July 13 with yields at 0.8 tons per acre. The five-year average is 1.4 tons.

Environment Canada says Grande Prairie has had close to 21 millimetres, or around eight-tenths of rain, since Friday.
