Agricultural disaster declared in M.D. of Greenview

Jul 29, 2021 | 4:47 PM

During their July 27 meeting, the M.D. of Greenview declared an agricultural disaster.

Greenview Council made the declaration to help address and bring attention to the drought conditions that have significantly impacted agricultural producers in the area.

Record-breaking temperatures in June, combined with warm weather in early July, heavy winds and a lack of rain have combined to impact the crop and livestock producers across the MD.

Some local producers are seeing as much as a 75 per cent reduction affecting harvest on forage lands.

“Greenview Council recognizes the concerns and hardships of our local agricultural producers,” said M.D. of Greenview Reeve Dale Smith.

“Declaring an agricultural disaster raises awareness of the conditions and adversities faced by some in our agricultural community and shows our support.”

Council is strongly urging the provincial ministry to lobby the federal government on behalf of Alberta livestock producers to include Greenview in the list of municipalities receiving an early designation of livestock tax deferral.
