Council to consider transfer of Legion Field amenities to city

The City of Grande Prairie has been asked to take over ownership of some amenities at Legion Field, including the media tower, bleachers, scoreboard, and lights, from the Grande Prairie Football Association.

Manager of Sports Development, Wellness, and Culture for the city Stephanie Cajolais says this gifting of assets to the city is due to some needed upgrades the current owners do not have the resources to cover, after a recent report found approximately $120,000 in improvements needed to these amenities.

“(Including) replacing the exterior staircase, and then there is some painting of the media tower inside and out. Just some general maintenance and repair items that need to be done,” said Cajolais.

While there is some work to be done in the near-term, Cajolais says she sees a lot of benefits for the city to take control of those amenities, as they already hold ownership of the land at the site, which is located adjacent to Peace Wapiti Academy and Grande Prairie Composite High School.

“It’s the only certified track and field facility in the northwest region, so it kind of enables full use of the site which would certainly enhance the city’s ability to attract large-scale events and promote sport tourism to the community and across the region.”

City council will vote on the proposal at August 9’s meeting.
