Local, provincial and federal politicians gathered at the Weyerhaeuser Tree Grove in Grande Prairie on August 11 to celebrate the planting of Weyerhaeuser’s 250 millionth tree in Alberta.

The planting of 250 million trees in the province is a major milestone for Weyerhaeuser and the Peace Region.

In order to get the supplies they use at their facilities across Alberta, Weyerhaeuser plants their trees at their Forest Management Agreement Areas (FMA’s).

Whenever Weyerhaeuser takes a tree out to use at one of its facilities, it will plant two more to make up for the one taken away.

County of Grande Prairie Reeve Leanne Beaupre says her community has been directly impacted by Weyerhaeuser’s contribution. She adds this is a great achievement for Weyerhaeuser and the surrounding community.

“It’s pretty exciting, especially for this community. Earlier I had mentioned that forestry touches everyone and in some capacity, has touched everyone in this community. It’s not only a part of our livelihood, but it’s also part of our initiative with greening the world.”

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry for Alberta Devin Dreeshen spoke to EverythingGP at the event. He says it is great that companies like Weyerhaeuser are giving back and having a positive impact in Alberta and the local communities.

“When you look across all the forest companies across the province, there has been about 1.7 billion trees planted over the last 20 years,” said Minister Dreeshen.

“To me, that just goes to show the environmental and sustainable work that our foresters do on a yearly basis is incredible. It’s a really great story that we as a province want to tell. Albertans should really take pride in our forestry sector.”

“This is just fantastic,” said Wendy Crosina with Weyerhaeuser. “This means so much to Weyerhaeuser. We’re a 120-year-old company and our business is planting trees. This is just a testament to our longevity and our success I guess at planting trees.”

Weyerhaeuser’s FMA’s cover about 1.2 million hectares of land across Alberta.

The Weyerhaeuser mill located just outside of Grande Prairie primarily makes dimensional lumber.
