Alberta Disc Golf Provincial Championship moves into Grande Prairie

The Grande Prairie Disc Golf Club is playing host to the Alberta Disc Golf Provincial Championship this weekend.

Tournament play will take place on August 14 and 15, and will be held at all three Grande Prairie disc golf courses.

President of the Grande Prairie Disc Golf Club Michael Curtiss says this will be the biggest tournament the club has had the opportunity to host.

“We’ve never ran a tournament this large, but we’re looking forward to it. We are going to have people out at our three courses pretty much constantly,” said Curtiss.

“Right now, I think we have about 125 (players) registered and I think that’s about 50 more than our biggest tournament in the past. It’ll be a good tournament and show with a lot of moving parts.”

Curtiss says the tournament will have registration at Grain Bin Brewery on Friday afternoon, a skills competition on Saturday, and then an awards ceremony on the Sunday.

He adds that it’s an honour for the club to host the provincial tournament, saying it shows just how much the sport of disc golf has grown in Grande Prairie over the last decade.

“When I started just five years ago, there was one course and some ideas of a second course,” he said. “We’ve added two courses (since then). If you go to the Thrill Hill course on weekends in the summer, it’s busy all the time and the need for those other two courses is there.”

“There is definitely a lot of amateur players that are playing, and they aren’t necessarily out there playing for the club, they’re just out there for a fun weekend, afternoon or evening.”

Curtiss also encourages anyone who is considering trying out disc golf to check out the club’s social nights on Tuesdays, as well as other events they have going on throughout the year.
