Helping Hands of Grande Prairie looking for sponsors to help get youth school supplies

The local group Helping Hands of Grande Prairie is asking community members to help sponsor youth in need for the upcoming school year.

Helping Hands of Grande Prairie is a group put together that works to help fill needs within the community. Those needs are then fulfilled by members wanting to help out their neighbors.

Jennifer Farquhar, the Founder of Helping Hands of Grande Prairie, says they’re looking to find sponsors for seven families who need help getting school supplies for their kids.

“We look to provide basic school supplies, a new backpack, a new back-to-school outfit, and a pair of running shoes for each child,” she said.

The students and families they are trying to help out range from Grades 1-12.

Farquhar tells EverythingGP they have been running this back-to-school sponsor campaign for the last four years and have been able to help 80 families get school supplies for their kids in the process.

Farquhar says they do this so they can take the stress off of families who are in need.

“These are all families that are struggling to provide a lot of the basics for their children. Whether it be something they’ve maybe, just recently fallen upon, we help families kind of all over the spectrum.”

Those interested in sponsoring a family for the upcoming school year can do so, by contacting Helping Hands of Grande Prairie on their Facebook page.

“On our Facebook wall, we have a list of children available for sponsorships,” explained Farquhar.

“What a sponsor would do would inbox us, let us know which family best fits their sponsorship abilities, and from there, we can provide them with the details on the child and the needed supplies.”

Farquhar mentioned their goal is to have all the families and their children lined up with sponsors by August 25.
