RCMP reminding motorists to practice school bus safety while on roads

Oct 2, 2021 | 5:00 AM

The Peace Regional RCMP is reminding motorists with the school year now in full swing, people should remain attentive when encountering school buses and when traveling through school or playground zones.

The RCMP says every year the detachment, which covers the Peace River and Grimshaw area, fields multiple complaints of motorists driving past stopped school buses when they’re required to stop.

This practice can prove to be very dangerous and potentially puts the lives of children and youth at risk.

Those who fail to stop before approaching a school bus with flashing red lights could face a fine of $567 along with six demerit points.

When a school bus is stopped with yellow or red flashing lights, motorists are asked to do the following:

  • When you see a school bus, assume children will be around and take extra care – leave lots of space around the bus.
  • When the bus turns on the flashing yellow lights – this means it is about to stop to pick up children. Slow down and prepare to stop.
  • When the bus turns on the flashing red lights – this means STOP in BOTH directions. Never pass a school bus with flashing red lights in either direction. Stop well back from the bus. If you have any doubt about what to do – STOP!

The RCMP also wants to remind residents to follow all signs while in a school zone and also follow the posted speed limit.
