Grande Prairie records 40th COVID-19 death, 145 new cases added over weekend

The City of Grande Prairie recorded its 40th death as a result of COVID-19 over the weekend.

The death recorded in Grande Prairie was one of 21 in Alberta from October 1-3. 2,752 Albertans have now died as a result of COVID-19.

Of the 21 deaths recorded in the province, five were in the North Zone. The deaths were a male in their 40’s, a male in his 50’s, a male in their 70’s and two men in their 80’s. All of the deaths at pre-existing conditions.

In Grande Prairie there were 145 new cases and 91 recoveries over the last three days, bringing the total number of active cases in the Swan City up by 53 to 550.

The County of Grande Prairie added 38 new cases and 43 recoveries. There are 286 active cases in that region.

Over the weekend, Alberta added 4,037 new COVID-19 cases on 39,265 tests, resulting in a 10.2 per cent test positivity rate.

Active case totals, as of October 3 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 550 active (+53)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 286 active (-5)
  • MD of Greenview: 160 active (+6)
  • Birch Hills County: 20 active (-1)
  • MD of Spirit River: nine active (+1)
  • Saddle Hills County: seven active (-1)
  • MD of Peace: 171 active (-13)
  • MD of Fairview: 80 active (+8)
  • MD of Smoky River: 56 active (+5)
  • Big Lakes County: 123 active (+3)
  • Clear Hills County: 31 active (-5)
  • County of Northern Lights: 66 active (-1)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 67 active (+3)
  • Mackenzie County: 236 active (+8)

Across the province, hospitalizations grew by 13 to 1,079, while ICU patients fell by six down to 257.

In the North Zone, 142 people are in hospital (down seven), while 10 people are in the ICU (down two).

Of the 257 people in the ICU right now, 219 are unvaccinated against COVID-19.

In Grande Prairie, 68.4 per cent of people who are eligible have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine (56.8 per cent of the total population), while 57.4 per cent of the eligible population have been fully vaccinated (47.6 per cent of the total population).

In Alberta, 84.2 per cent of the eligible population has received one dose of the vaccine, while 74.9 per cent of those eligible are fully vaccinated.
