Grande Prairie’s CIBC Run for the Cure raises over $30K

Oct 5, 2021 | 11:22 AM

Despite the 2021 CIBC Run for the Cure being held virtually for the second year in a row due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers are considering the fundraising event a success.

CIBC Run for the Cure Committee Member Kristine Warr says there were 112 participants in the Peace Region; who although were unable to run together in person, all ran together for the same cause, breast cancer research.

Warr says over $9 Million was raised across Canada for the CIBC Run for the Cure this year, with the Grande Prairie Region raising over $30,000 of it.

“It was a little less than last year, even that was virtual as well, so we were hoping to get around the same as that, which was $36,000,” she said. “So we’re just under that, which I think is still pretty successful. I’m happy with that.”

The run started with opening ceremonies at 9:00 a.m., which Warr says was live-streamed to a few different social media platforms.

“They could go onto YouTube, Facebook, and YESTV and watch the opening ceremonies, and then they just went out to do their walk or run in their neighborhood or wherever they wanted to go.

Warr hopes the fundraiser can be back in person next year, but suggests it could be both in-person and virtual to allow more opportunities for people to participate, regardless of their schedules.

“It’s nice to get everyone together to celebrate and just be together, but maybe we would be able to incorporate a virtual part of it as well so people can participate even if they’re not able to come out and participate in the morning.”

Since the CIBC Run for the Cure began in 1992, $471 million has been raised for breast cancer research across Canada.

Donations can still be made for the 2021 CIBC Run for the Cure, which can be found here.

The 2022 CIBC Run for the Cure is set for Sunday, October 2.
