Municipal Election

Municipal election advance voting starts today in Grande Prairie

Oct 8, 2021 | 6:00 AM

Advance voting starts Friday in Grande Prairie for the upcoming municipal election.

Polls are open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Grande Prairie City Hall.

Advance polls will also be open the same hours Saturday and again on October 15 and 16.

Returning Officer Arlene Karbashewski says anyone wanting to vote needs to bring some identification.

“Your ID must show a City of Grande Prairie residential address. You need to be at least 18-years-old, a Canadian citizen and a resident of the city.”

She adds there are alternatives to showing ID for recent arrivals to Grande Prairie.

“If they’ve set up their utilities of their Telus phone bill (at) their new address, they can show a downloaded copy of their Telus bill or their utility bill right on their cell phone and that’s acceptable.”

Identification with only a post office box number is not accepted.

People can vote for one candidate for mayor, up to eight for city council, and up to seven for public school trustee or five for separate school board trustee in Ward 1.

Karbashewski says officials are not sure how high turnout will be this year.

“We do anticipate (that) because the provincial ballot is being voted on for Senate election and the referendum questions, we do anticipate there could be higher volumes of voters coming out to vote this time around.”

Masks are mandatory and physical distancing for line-ups will also be in place.
