Nearly 90 per cent of Peace Region crop combined

Oct 8, 2021 | 2:35 PM

The province’s crop report dated October 5 says 87.8 per cent of the Peace Region crop had been combined as of that date.

The report was compiled before the rain earlier this week.

Environment Canada says Grande Prairie had 8.1 millimetres of rain Tuesday, which translates to between three and four-tenths.

The completion breakdown by crop is 98.6 per cent for peas, 92.3 for spring wheat, 87.2 for barley, 85.2 for oats and 82.2 for canola.

The report says the canola harvest is being delayed because of green second growth in some fields. Some hail and wind damage in canola fields is also being reported.

Yields are estimated, on average, at 33.3 bushels per acre for spring wheat, 41.6 for barley, 58 for oats, 28 for canola and 28.1 for peas. That is at 72.4 per cent of the five-year yield index, 78 per cent of the 10-year index.

Around 96 per cent of the hard red spring wheat and 53 per cent of the oats are in the top two grades.

Twelve per cent of the barley is malt, 84 per cent Number 1.

All the canola is coming off Number 1.

No peas are rated number 1 but 87 per cent graded Number 2.
