Fertilizer distribution “supercentre” project in Rycroft advances with land lease agreement

A land lease agreement has been signed in Rycroft, which moves the development of a proposed fertilizer distribution “supercentre” one step closer.

The deal was announced late last week between Side Group Rail and Genesis Fertilizers, which will grant Genesis the ability to develop the production and distribution centre in the community, about 70 km north of Grande Prairie.

The Peace County SuperCentre is intended to serve the entire Peace Region and beyond.

“This facility will serve as a major fertilizer distribution hub for Northern Alberta and Northeastern British Columbia,” said Jason Mann, CEO of Genesis.

Genesis officials say the facility would be able to produce 700,000 metric tonnes (Mt) of urea fertilizer each year, with 525,000 Mt available for purchase by farmers through an offtake arrangement.

They add the facility is intended to create a farmer-owned production and distribution network, while also giving farmers a way to join in profit sharing along the supply chain.

“Expanding our distribution capacity in the Peace Region demonstrates Genesis’ commitment to vertically integrate farming businesses, allowing investors to participate up the agri-business value chain to maximize farm profitability.”

As for the next steps, Genesis officials say they are working with Axcess Capital to raise capital for the next phase of the project. This phase will consist of front-end engineering and design work for the plant.

The proposed facility will be located next to the Side Group Rail Rycroft Reload location.

The community will have an opportunity to learn more about the proposed project during an open house on Wednesday, October 27 from 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. in Rycroft. Registration is required, which can be completed here.
