Final paving, traffic signal work for downtown rehab starts next week

Oct 22, 2021 | 12:58 PM

The City of Grande Prairie says the downtown rehabilitation project is heading into the final stages of work for the season next week.

The city says starting Monday, crews will begin the final paving of the roadway on 100 Avenue between 98 Street and 100 Street. Work will start with the milling of the existing pavement on 98 Street and 100 Avenue intersection and on 100 Street between 99 Avenue and 101 Avenue.

Once milled, all areas will get repaved followed by the final asphalt surface being laid in the travel and parking lanes on 100 Avenue.

While paving is underway on both the 98 Street and 100 Street intersections, traffic will be reduced to one lane going both north and south.

For the duration of the paving, 100 Avenue between 100 Street and 98 Street will remain closed.

Meantime on Sunday, the intersection of 98 Avenue and 100 Avenue will become a three-way stop for motorists from 7:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

So far, no date has been set for when 100 Avenue could re-open to traffic, but Project Manager for Phase 4 of the project, Conor Coney, told EverythingGP earlier this week they have managed to make quite a bit of progress over the last couple of months.

“The bulk of the work has been completed this year. We’ve completed a majority of the work which is the sanitary, water and storm replacement. We’ve built the grid back up, and now we have a complete hard roadway surface that’s been paved and most of the hard sidewalks have been surfaced.”

Because of the cooler weather moving into the Swan City with the fall season here, Coney said some minor work will need to be put off until the temperatures warm up.

“There are some items that remain that we know of. Landscaping, trees and shrubs were elected to be done next year so that there’s a better establishment period,” he said.

“We foresee some repair work possibly and pavement stonework next year.”
