Safety City in person Halloween fundraiser and virtual event set for October 30

Oct 24, 2021 | 7:00 AM

Grande Prairie and Area Safe Communities is set to host both a virtual Halloween dance and an in-person Halloween fundraiser on October 30 at Safety City.

Executive Director Cindy Blinston says the in-person event will take place at Safety City and will see a variety of activities for people of all ages to participate in, including live, Halloween-themed music from a DJ.

“We’re going to have some carnival games where they will get some little prizes along the way, and we will have trick or treating as always at Safety City.”

She says a scavenger hunt is planned for the day, which ties in safety messages about trick or treating safety and being out in the community on Halloween night.

Blinston says they will also be launching their new mascot, Barott the Safety Squirrel.

“Which will be a colouring contest and a little mascot that the kids can colour him and then take him around on Halloween and take pictures of him enjoying Halloween with them.”

Blinston says the fundraising part of the event will come from the admission tickets, which will be $15 per family (up to six people), or $5 per person, although she adds they are also working to launch a cash raffle which will start at the event on the October 30, with a draw date planned for December.

The money raised will go towards programming at Safety City, such as car seat safety checks, summer programming, and low-cost programming for schools.

Blinston tells EverythingGP the money raised will also be set aside for building maintenance, as she says fundraising efforts have been limited due to COVID-19.

“As you can imagine, Safety City with the buildings and everything, there is a fair amount of maintenance cost and we really haven’t been able to fundraise like we usually do for the past year and a half and we have reduced revenue from facility rentals and things like that so we are in need in funds in order to maintain the buildings and also to do some upgrades in some areas.”

The in-person event is participating in the Alberta Restrictions Exemption Program. Blinston says a virtual Halloween dance will take place on the evening of October 30, for those who are unable to attend the in-person event.

“It’s a way to include more people into the Halloween fun.”

The Safety City Halloween Fundraiser will take place on October 30 from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. with the virtual dance party set for 7 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Residents are asked to register for the free, virtual dance ahead of time on Eventbrite.
