Grande Prairie records COVID-19 fatality, 47 new cases over weekend

The City of Grande Prairie added 47 new COVID-19 cases and 48 recoveries over the weekend, along with one death, bringing the active case total in the city down to 197.

The fatality was one of 25 deaths provincially linked to COVID-19 which were reported to Alberta Health over the weekend. There have now been 49 deaths linked to COVID-19 in the city, and 3,051 in Alberta since March of 2020.

In the County of Grande Prairie, there were 26 new cases and 23 recoveries recorded between Friday and Sunday. There are now 108 active COVID-19 cases in that region.

As a whole, Alberta added 1,592 new cases following the completion of 8,030 tests between Oct. 22-24, resulting in a ~6.1 per cent positivity rate.

Active case totals, as of October 24 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • Birch Hills County: six active (-2)
  • MD of Spirit River: 13 active (-)
  • Saddle Hills County: 15 active (-2)

  • MD of Smoky River: nine active (-7)
  • Big Lakes County: 113 active (-1)
  • Clear Hills County: five active (-1)
  • County of Northern Lights: 13 active (-6)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 17 active (-3)

Across the province, hospitalizations dropped by 68 to 821, while the number of ICU patients dropped by nine to 182.

Of those admitted to intensive care, 146 are unvaccinated, 13 are partially vaccinated, and 23 are fully vaccinated.

In the North Zone, there are 115 people in the hospital (down 17), while 11 people are in the ICU (up two).

In Grande Prairie, 71.3 per cent of people who are eligible have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine (59.2 per cent of the total population), while 62.4 per cent of the eligible population has been fully vaccinated (51.8 per cent of the total population).

In Alberta, 86.6 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 78.9 per cent of those eligible are fully vaccinated.
