In-person Remembrance Day ceremonies returning on Thursday

Nov 9, 2021 | 6:00 AM

In-person Remembrance Day ceremonies will return Thursday in Grande Prairie.

Doors will open at the downtown arena at 9:45 a.m. for the Legion ceremony with the service starting at 10:45 a.m.

Head of Ceremonies Joanne Wood says the ceremony will look a little different this year.

“People won’t actually be laying wreaths. They’ll all be pre-laid, but there will still be a full service,” she explained.

Wood adds there are still a lot of veterans who attend.

“A lot of people when they hear the word veteran, they tend to think of the world wars and what a lot of people aren’t recognizing is the fact that we actually have a lot of veterans that are more in the 30 to 40 range in age.”

“We have the Afghan veterans and also our RCMP and some first responders are considered veterans now as well.”

The service will also be live-streamed on the Legion’s Facebook page. There will be a lunch, bursary presentations and other things at the Legion Hall starting at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Anyone 12 or older will need to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19, a recent negative test result or proof of a medical exemption. Masks are mandatory inside the arena.

While the indoor ceremony is taking place, the outdoor one organized by the Army, Navy, Air Force Veterans will be held at the cenotaph in Jubilee Park.
