Bressey elected Alberta Municipalities director for mid-sized cities

Grande Prairie City Councillor Dylan Bressey has been elected as a director for cities up to 500,000 with Alberta Municipalities, following a nail-biter election between himself and the mayor of Airdrie.

The election for the Alberta Municipalities board of directors, previously known as the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association, took place at the annual convention in Edmonton on November 17-19.

“This is an election that was done by my peers from city councils across the province, and to have your work recognized by your peers is always an exciting thing,” said Bressey.

He says the vote came down to a runoff vote, following a tie between himself and Airdrie Mayor Peter Brown.

“And I won the runoff by two, so truly every vote mattered,” he added.

With the vote being that close, Bressey says he is both grateful and thankful his fellow colleagues on Grande Prairie City Council endorsed him during his campaign.

“They came and campaigned alongside me,” he said.

“So, my Grande Prairie colleagues being there and working hard alongside me was really important for me to get elected.”

Former Grande Prairie Mayor Bill Given and former Councillor Helen Rice had previously represented Grande Prairie on the associations’s board of directors. With that, Bressey tells EverythingGP he is honoured to be another strong voice on the board.

“Helen Rice and Bill Given were a strong voice for mid-size cities and I’m excited to follow in their footstep.”

Previously, Bressey had been serving on the AUMA municipal fiscal health working group. Now being on the board of directors, he is eager to advocate on many of the items sitting before the association.

“Including making sure that we have a strong say in the future of policing in Alberta and make sure provincial infrastructure funding is sustainable and predictable.”

In an interview with EverythingGP back in October, Bressey shared why municipal government is so important to him, which is why he is even eager to advocate for municipalities across the province.
