Curling communities helps out team with Peace Region connections after a theft

A curling team with Peace Region connections says the curling community rallied to help after one of their cars, with two of the player’s gear inside, was stolen.

Team Skrlik was playing in Red Deer last weekend.

Geri-Lynn Ramsay is teammates with Nampa-raised sisters Kayla and Ashton Skrlik.

She says she had started her car to let it warm up while they were checking out of their hotel. After going in and coming back out in less than 10 minutes, the car was gone.

Ramsay says word spread quickly as a lot of other curlers were staying at the same hotel.

“A couple coaches handed me their shoes to use if I needed and if I needed anything else they were there,” she said.

“I sent the three other girls to the curling club to play the game while I filled out the police report. Once I got there, there was gear on the table. There was everything I needed, pants, shirt, shoes, and everything that we collected.”

A couple of people from Red Deer Crime Watch and other curlers also helped.

Ramsay says the car was later recovered in Penhold, but all the curling gear that belonged to both her and Ashton was gone.

“We’ve got shoes because we have to work those in and that’s going to be the hardest transition. Curling shoes aren’t exactly the easiest thing to replace. We work them in for years,” she explained.

“We’re going to do our best. The curling stores around here and our sponsor have been supportive of us trying new shoes out to pick which ones we are going to stick with.”

Ramsay says she was shocked because nothing like this had ever happened to her before, but also grateful for the help.

Team Skrlik lost their first two games at the Red Deer Curling Classic, then won three in a row before losing to Corryn Brown in a C Event qualifier.

The team’s next event will be a women’s provincials qualifier in Vulcan starting on December 2.
