Northwest Alberta Sports Excellence Awards open January 1, 2022

Nominations for the eighth annual Northwest Alberta Sports Excellence Awards open on January 1, 2022.

The annual awards are hosted by the Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection to help recognize and celebrate champions in sports across the region.

Executive Director for Sports Connection Karna Germshied says athletes, coaches, volunteers, and sporting officials in northwestern Alberta can be nominated.

“So, all the way north to the Northwest Territories, northeast B.C. border and then south to Fox Creek and east to Slave Lake,” Germsheid explained. “The region is quite large and probably really the reason we get all the significant nominations that we generally get.”

Germsheid tells EverythingGP they usually receive between 45-55 nominations every year.

“The quality of the nominations that come through is astounding, and I know the selection committee really has a hard time sometimes picking those winners, so it is pretty special.”

Awards range for both High-Performance Awards, as well as Community Awards.

• High-Performance Awards: Female and Male Athlete of the Year, Junior Female and Male Athlete of the Year, Team of the Year, Coach of the year.
• Community Awards: Developmental Coach of the Year, Outstanding Official, Sport Builder, Unsung Hero, Sport Event of the Year, Community Sportsmanship Award.

“We were excited to see community sport coming back to our region over the past year and we look forward to bringing the community together to recognize and celebrate the hard work and resilience of athletes, coaches, volunteers, and officials in northwest Alberta,” added Germsheid.

Award recipients will be announced on March 18, tickets can be purchased starting February 1 2022 on the Grande Prairie Sport Connection website.
