Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection postpones winter Try-It Day postponed

Jan 5, 2022 | 1:12 PM

The Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection says it has postponed its winter Try-It Day scheduled to take place on January 15.

The annual event occurs in both the winter and summer, with normally over 600 people who register to try out a new sport.

Executive Director Karna Germshied says this decision was made because of the current COVID-19 situation going on in the Grande Prairie region.

“We’ve got more than 20 different sport organizations that are involved and the event does include kids registering for up to four (different) sessions, which means we will be mixing kids between four different groups of people,” she said.

“Just in the nature of what is going on with COVID-19, we just want to ensure that it is a successful event for everyone.”

As of January 3, there were 112 active COVID-19 cases in the City of Grande Prairie.

The event is now scheduled to take place on February 26.

Boxing, gymnastics, lacrosse and skateboarding are just some of the sports youth are able to try out on Try-It Day.

Unfortunately, because of the postponement, Germshied mentioned some organizations might not be able to participate anymore because of the short notice. However, she is hopeful other organizations will jump on board to offer youth a chance to try something new.

“Carrying over isn’t realistic with this type of event. What it does is invite regional sport organizations to participate, so it’s really their event and we’re just creating an opportunity to participate,” she explained.

“We’re undoubtedly going to lose some sports but gain some others. It doesn’t naturally just carry over, so the registration will close and completely re-open again, so we’ll have to start over from scratch.”

Germshied mentioned so far registration numbers for Try-It Day are a bit lower than what they usually are, however, she adds most people do sign up closer to the event.

“We were around 150 (people registered), usually we’re at about 600 registered by the time we close registration. I didn’t see a big change in those numbers, they were increasing every day.”
