Studs on Ice returning to Clairmont Jan. 16

Jan 8, 2022 | 6:00 AM

Studs on Ice is returning to Clairmont Lake on January 16.

The Studs on Ice event brings together motorcycle enthusiasts who race on a frozen pond for bragging rights.

The annual event is the first stop on a four-race schedule throughout the Peace Region.

Treasurer of the Wapiti Off-Road Association Dwayne Hausler says while COVID-19 has hung a cloud over their races the last couple of years, the races have still proven to be very successful.

“We’ve been successful holding it every year so far since the pandemic first hit. We do enforce the rules and it’s been a go and growing every year.”

Hausler tells EverythingGP most of the people who race in the four events are from the Peace Region.

“Generally, we have between 5-15 racers per class. We do run a beginner class and a pro class for the motorcycles and just one open class for the ATV’s,” Hausler said.

“We do have a couple riders who do come up and play with us from Edmonton on the ice, but generally, it’s all locals.”

Currently, work is underway to get Clairmont Lake ready for the event.

“Usually around Boxing Day every year we go out on the lake and use a chainsaw to cut through the ice and measure the ice thickness,” Hausler explained.

“Once it hits 12-14 inches, we are usually good to go with a small pickup truck. Currently, we are sitting at 16-20 inches. Once the ice thickness is set, we usually create a small track and increase it to 7-8 kilometres for race day.”

At this time, it’s unknown if spectators will be allowed to watch. This is because of the current public health restrictions in place.

Other stops on the Studs on Ice schedule include:

February 6 – Charlie Lake, Fort St. John

March 5-6 – Lac Cardinal, Grimshaw

March 13 – Clairmont Lake
