Koe defeats Appelman in men’s provincial championship to advance to 2022 Brier

Kevin Koe’s rink from Calgary is off to another Brier championship.

Koe defeated Ted Appelman’s Edmonton rink 8-4 in eight ends on Sunday night to help him earn his seventh provincial title at the Best of Alberta curling championship in Grande Prairie.

Koe tells EverythingGP he’s happy with how his rink performed this week.

“We played great all week, won every game fairly handily, but today we played Ted and we knew he was going to be aggressive,” he said.

“By far this was our best game of the week. After we got out of the first end up, it wasn’t smooth sailing, but we weren’t in too much trouble after that.”

While he’s won provincial titles in the past, Koe says it’s a little extra special winning it in the place he used to call home.

“I spent four years up here, one of my kids was born up here, so I loved it up here. Grande Prairie’s been good to me, I won a Canada Cup up here as well, so I love getting back up here and hopefully we get another chance to come here down the road.”

Koe also thanked the organizers for getting the event off smoothly, especially with COVID-19 concerns lingering throughout the province.

“They put on a great event,” Koe said. “COVID threw a bit of a wrench into it, but to actually complete it when it was up in the air whether it would even happen, it’s great work by the organizing committee.”

Koe’s rink lost in the final against Brandon Botcher’s rink in the 2021 edition of the Brier. He mentioned he’s excited to get another opportunity to try and win a national title, as well as hopefully play in front of fans.

“It was different in the bubble and we’re looking forward (to it). Hopefully, there will be no more issues by March. To be able to play in front of fans again, especially in our home province won’t even compare to last year.”

The 2022 Brier is scheduled to take place from March 4-13 in Lethbridge.
