Indoor disc golf putting league starting in Grande Prairie

Jan 13, 2022 | 6:00 AM

The Grande Prairie Disc Golf Club has started an indoor putting league at the new rec. centre in the Smith subdivision.

The club’s Mike Heckbert says the club wanted to get together in the winter as they cannot play on the outdoor courses this time of year.

“Putting is an aspect of disc golf that is usually the hardest part. It’s getting that disc into the basket when you are really close.”

“In a putting league, we will just practice that part of the game in a social environment (and) a nice, warm place.”

He adds the Smith recreation centre having an indoor skateboard park meant they could set up some interesting greens.

“We rented out the whole facility, which is 200 feet by 80 feet, which offered all kinds of opportunities for us because, in disc golf, 200 feet is what some full holes from tee to green are.”

Heckbert says new people are invited to come try the sport.

“We had a 12-year-old there and he had a blast. We had some newer players and then we had experienced players like myself there.”

“Anyone who is experienced more than willing to pull somebody aside, teach them, show them the ropes. One thing newer players can benefit from is just watching how everybody puts the disc in the basket.”

The league started on Tuesday and will run every Tuesday through February 15.
