County residents encouraged to enter Snow Sculpture Contest

Jan 22, 2022 | 6:00 AM

With a stretch of warm weather hitting the Peace Region over the next week, the County of Grande Prairie is encouraging its residents to build snowmen as part of their Snow Sculpture Contest.

Nora-lee Gilkyson, Assistant Manager of Parks and Recreation for the County says the goal of the contest is to get families outside.

“It’s just an opportunity for families to get outside and create a building, sculpture and art creations using the snow or ice.”

This is the second consecutive year the County has hosted the Snow Sculpture Contest.

“Last year was the first year for the program, we ran it over the Christmas break and had five to six entrees,” she said. “Unfortunately for us, the snow last year wasn’t really conducive to building snow sculptures”

Because the contest last year was held in such a short timeframe, the County has decided to expand the contest to last for a full month this year, so residents can hopefully have better snowmaking conditions.

“We’re running the program for a month to give people lots of time to get out and enjoy this activity with their family.”

Families can submit their snow sculpture creations by tagging the County of Grande Prairie’s social media accounts.

There only criteria there is for entering the contest is to get creative.

The best creations will also receive a prize.

“All entries will be eligible to win a gift card from the County of Grande Prairie,” said Gilkyson. “We (also) have prizes for the top three entries. The first prize will be a $250 gift card, second prize will be a family tubing pass at Nitehawk and the third prize will be a winter fun basket.”
