Grande Prairie records 58th COVID-19 death

The City of Grande Prairie recorded its 58th death as a result of COVID-19.

The death in Grande Prairie was a female in her 80s and the case had pre-existing conditions. It was the only death reported in the North Zone. To date, 3,531 Albertans have died as a result of COVID-19.

Grande Prairie meantime added 45 new cases of COVID-19 for January 27, along with 26 recoveries, there are now 368 active cases in the city (up 18).

The County of Grande Prairie recorded 23 new COVID-19 cases along with nine recoveries, bringing the total number of active cases to 124 (up 14).

Across Alberta, 3,036 new cases were identified from 8,655 tests, resulting in a test positivity rate of 35 per cent. There are currently 41,300 active cases in the province.

Provincial officials say with the rollout of rapid tests to most households, the actual number of new COVID-19 infections in the province is likely higher than what is being reported.

Active case totals, as of January 27 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 368 active (+18)

  • MD of Spirit River: 12 active (+3)
  • Saddle Hills County: two active (-)
  • MD of Peace: 80 active (-3)

  • MD of Smoky River: 12 active (+3)
  • Big Lakes County: 69 active (-)
  • Clear Hills County: seven active (-)
  • County of Northern Lights: 12 active (-1)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 25 active (-1)

The province saw hospitalizations increase to 1,496 (up 30), while ICU patients dropped by one to 105. Of those in the hospital, 385 are unvaccinated, while in the ICU, 51 of the 105 patients are unvaccinated.

In the North Zone, 88 people are in hospital (up two), six of whom are in the ICU (same).

To date, 89.7 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 86 per cent of those eligible have received at least two doses.
