Nominations wrapping up for Sports Excellence Awards

Jan 29, 2022 | 7:00 AM

January 31 is the deadline to nominate someone for the Grande Prairie Regional Sports Connection’s annual North West Sports Excellence awards.

A total of eleven awards are being handed out, which Executive Director Karna Germsheid says recognizes high performance, along with community sports involvement.

“Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, Developmental Coach of the Year, Outstanding Official, Unsung Hero, Sport Builder Awards, so lots of great opportunities for volunteers, coaches, athletes, and any sports administrators that are involved in sports.”

Male and Female Athlete of the Year, Junior Male and Female Athlete of the Year, and Community Sportsmanship are the other awards that will be handed out on March 18.

Germsheid says they depend on the local sports community to submit nominations for these yearly awards.

“The Sport Connection really has nothing to do with (the nominations) other than to receive them.”

“It is very easy to nominate. There is a nomination form on our website www.gpsportconnect.ca. We also have forms that we are willing and able to send out to people.”

Germsheid adds in years past they have received between 45-55 nominations for these awards.

“I have to tell you that the quality of the nominations that come through is astounding. I know that the selection committee – which is chosen between the Sport Connection as well as community members within the region – really have a hard time sometimes picking those winners.”

Anyone in northwestern Alberta and northeastern B.C. can be nominated for these awards.
