County accepting applications for annual roadside clean-up program

Feb 1, 2022 | 12:51 PM

Non-profit groups in the County of Grande Prairie can now apply to participate in the annual roadside clean-up program this May.

The annual program invites groups in the community to help clean up the County’s roadsides once the snow melts in the springtime.

In 2021, the program had 32 non-profit groups clean nearly 285 kilometres of roadside and collect 12 tonnes of garbage.

Technical Services Manager for the County of Grande Prairie Jennifer Besinger says the annual program is open to non-profit groups in the community.

“We always have more applicants than routes available,” said Besinger. “It is important to get your application in early and then we do the selection progress after.”

Last year, the County dished out over $53,000 to groups that took part. The groups use the money raised to help keep operations going throughout the year.

Besinger mentions they try to place groups as close to their local area as possible.

“We do a group assessment on the applicants and we go from there. With the roadside clean-up, there are different zones, and we try to match the zone with the non-profit community as well,” she added.

“It varies differently and we do have different perspectives throughout the selection process.”

Applications can be submitted at the County of Grande Prairie website until March 25.

Besinger adds this program can be viewed as a win-win for both local community groups and County residents.

“This program has been fantastic to get some win-wins with the money into our community with the non-profit organizations, as well as getting our roadsides cleaned up on an annual basis.”

Groups accepted to participate in the roadside clean-up will receive a safety orientation prior to their start date.
