GPPL and Intercultural Association partnering up for Black History Month events

Feb 3, 2022 | 6:00 AM

February is Black History Month and the Grande Prairie Public Library (GPPL) and Grande Prairie Intercultural Association have partnered up to honour and celebrate the occasion.

Throughout February, the GPPL will be holding a virtual challenge for its users, as well as hosting a pair of virtual events for the public on February 26 and 27.

Jill Kergan with the GPPL says their goal for the virtual events on February 26 and 27 will be to help tell celebrate black history today and every other day.

“The goal of this event is to honour the history of black Canadians and celebrate the transformative work they’re doing,” she said.

Kergan tells EverythingGP the event held on February 26 will feature speakers and present bios presenting on black history and the impact it has had on them, the event set for February 27 she says will feature a ‘watch along’.

“The event on Sunday is a watch party. We’re watching the film Mr. Emancipation and after we’ll do a Q&A with Director Preston Chase,” Kergan explained. “He produced the documentary about his great uncle Walter Perry and he’s the man who organized Winsor’s (Ontario) historic Emancipation Day celebrations for 30 years.”

“Celebrations were so successful, they drew celebrities, politicians and civil rights leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The film explores the trends impact of the celebration on the community. The Director wanted to tell this story from beginning to end and show what his great uncle faced and ultimately what he did for the community.”

Kergan added the best way people can learn about Black History Month is through the library itself and their challenge.

“It incorporates books, podcasts, movies, and music as well. People can read, watch and listen to celebrate creators for Black History Month. We’ve put together a list of recommended books, films, albums and podcasts for inspiration.”

Residents can log their activity and share it, for a chance to win a prize at the end of the month.
