City announces plans for Family Day festivities

Feb 4, 2022 | 1:00 PM

Grande Prairie is gearing up for a fun-filled Family Day with a variety of free indoor and outdoor activities for the first time in two years on February 20.

The festivities are taking place on February 20 in light of Family Day on February 21.

Tracie Gillis who’s the Dryland Sports and Event Logistic Supervisor for Grande Prairie says the day will include family fun activities for all ages to enjoy.

“With two years of things going on out of our control, we are hoping people come and gather and join us with their families and come celebrate with us,” she said.

“In years past, our Family Day has been our biggest day of the year, and it’s so exciting to see the little ones and whole families come out and enjoy.”

Gillis says there will be free admission into the Eastlink Centre on Family Day which includes access to the fitness centre, fieldhouse, and swimming pool.

Free entry to the facility, including the fitness centre and fieldhouse will run from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. A family swim is also taking place from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., in two-hour interval booking slots.

“We have swim times, so you have to pre-book your swim time, but there are five different slots that you can pre-book yourself for your family and come swimming and join us that day,” Gillis explained.

Pre-registration for swimming will be available starting February 13.

Gillis tells EverythingGP in addition to the indoor activities planned, there are some fun outdoor events planned.

“We have our beautiful skating oval outside, and Co-Op is going to be providing us some hot chocolate and cookies out there. We have some entertainment going on out there as well with different family fun games and music and everything like that,” added Gillis.

The outdoor activities will last from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. All children under 18 must wear helmets while skating on the outdoor oval.

She tells EverythingGP depending on whether or not COVID-19 restrictions change, modifications for the event may be adjusted.
