Wastewater disposal-induced event responsible for earthquake south of Grande Prairie

Feb 9, 2022 | 1:19 PM

The Geological Survey of Canada confirmed to EverythingGP Wednesday that the 4.2 magnitude earthquake south of Musreau Lake on Tuesday afternoon had been caused by a wastewater disposal-induced event.

The Geological Survey of Canada says they received confirmation about the earthquake from the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER). The shake occurred on February 8 at 3:53 p.m. and was recorded at 10 kilometers deep. The epicentre of the earthquake was just south Musreau Lake.

The Geological Survey of Canada says so far there have been no damage (and none would be expected) or any reports of shaking.

EverythingGP has reached out to the AER to learn more information on what exactly was going on in the area at the time of the earthquake.
