Ice removal process underway in residential neighbourhoods

Feb 15, 2022 | 6:34 AM

Over the next two weeks, City of Grande Prairie crews will begin to remove ice in residential neighbourhoods.

The decision to remove ice from roads in residential neighbourhoods comes after a major freeze/thaw cycle, which has led to very slick driving conditions in some areas.

Wade Nellis with the City of Grande Prairie feels with the roads becoming so slick, they have decided now was the right time to begin chipping away at the ice in order to make conditions safer in the community.

“Basically we are initiating a special round of residential plowing just to try and remove this accumulating ice, mainly to help with the driveability and assist with drainage,” he said.

Nellis tells EverythingGP this is the first time city crews have had to attempt something like this.

“We have not initiated a round of plowing strictly to deal with ice previously,” he stated.

“This is a response to a prolonged period of unusually high temperatures which has caused a lot of this snow to melt and refreeze into ice in these residential neighbourhoods. We felt this was a prudent action.”

Nellis explains the same snow removal crews will be working with the city to help clear the ice. It will also be done with the same snow removal schedule used throughout the winter.

“We will be going along the regular snow removal schedule. We will be in residential neighborhoods usually the day before their garbage day and working on a two-week time frame.”

Those living in residential neighbourhoods are asked to remove their vehicles from the roadways before the plows come through their area in order to ensure the roads can be cleared as much as possible.
