Rural County Regional Fire Service stations looking to recruit more first responders

The County Regional Fire Service says it is accepting applications for paid response firefighters and medical first responders to help serve in Bezanson, Hythe, La Glace, Teepee Creek and Sexsmith fire stations.

“We’re recruiting at all of our rural stations and the intentions are to keep membership up, which we are doing well during COVID,” said District Fire Chief Bryan Hall.

Hall tells EverythingGP anyone is allowed to apply, as long as they live close to the fire station and are actively fit to perform firefighting duties.

“We don’t require anything. We put you through our program to start off with and whatever assists you bring to the table,” he explained.

“We put you through the paces to get you up to response level and then there’s ultimately more opportunities for training and advancement and growth opportunities within your station.”

Applicants must have a Grade 12 education, pass an RCMP Criminal Record Check and have a driver’s license.

Hall adds junior firefighters between the ages of 16-18 are also invited to attend community events and participate in training, as it could be a good way to get experience in the field if they are looking to pursue a career in firefighting.

“The cadet program is being revamped and brought back and there will be opportunities within the schools for that 16-18 (age group) there is a separate sort of process for the cadets you can get access to on the website. Their intention is we get them early and when they come of age to become a paid responder, we plan to keep them on.”

The deadline to apply is March 11.
