Fox Creek Ice Kings hosting breast cancer awareness game Feb. 25

The Fox Creek Ice Kings will be using their home game on Feb. 25 to help raise funds in support of breast cancer awareness.

Ronica Deciccio is scheduled to be a guest speaker at the game. She says a portion of each ticket sold, money raised from a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, and pink jerseys worn during the game, will all go to support the Eva Marie Cancer Support Fund.

“That charity specifically helps out for people in northern Alberta who have been affected by breast cancer who need assistance with funding for travelling, meals (and) all of the things that come with being in a more isolated area in order to get medical treatments for cancer,” she explained.

“Which is why they picked that charity (Eva Marie Cancer Support Fund), because it is relevant for the people here in town, it’s local and it has that pink side boom working north of town, so a lot of people know about it as well.”

Deciccio says she will be giving her speech during the ceremonial puck drop and focusing on the topic of ‘strength’. She tells EverythingGP she wants to tell fans her story of what she had to endure while watching her mother battle breast cancer five times.

“She had breast cancer twice, and she had retired early from the teaching profession because her health wouldn’t allow her to continue full time,” said Deciccio. “While she was up here in Fox Creek, she actually had breast cancer again another three more times, so in total, she ended up having breast cancer a total of five times.”

“When I speak on Friday, strength is going to be a big focus of what I talk about. Sometimes we have the strength and sometimes we lend our strength to others, but it is okay. We are not always strong and going through the battle of breast cancer is something you cannot always be strong with and it’s at those times you kind of need to lean on your community,” she added.

The ceremonial puck drop will also feature other breast cancer survivors from within the community.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, February 25, puck drop at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased at the door.
