International Women’s Day works towards breaking gender bias

Mar 8, 2022 | 2:14 PM

March 8 is International Women’s Day, a day intended to raise awareness of inequality and promote changes that lead to more inclusivity.

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is “Break the Bias,” which works towards gender equality in our communities, workplaces, schools, colleges, and universities on the day and beyond.

Odyssey House Education and Engagement Director Kerrin Jackson, says the day also celebrates the social, economic, and political achievements of women across the world.

She adds they are celebrating the day through Odyssey House social media platforms and through supporting the City of Grande Prairie’s Women of Influence Awards.

“We are trying to engage our community in participating in the Break the Bias campaign, which is put on by the International Women’s Day Association,” she said.

Jackson tells EverythingGP Odyssey House believes it’s important to work towards breaking the bias as gender equality is a key point in its mission and vision.

“Especially at the base of our work gender norms and bias are at the basis of where domestic violence begins so by promoting equality in women we are also working towards breaking those biases and further working towards our mission and vision,” she explained.

Odyssey House in Grande Prairie runs various programs targeted to help women in the community.

“The most common one that people know us by is our emergency shelter however we do have other programs including our second stage housing, community support services, childcare support services, and public education,” said Jackson.

She explains there are a few ways people can get involved to support International Women’s Day.

“Whether it’s jumping on one of our social media pages and sharing the information that we have, creating awareness within their own agencies, and you can also hop onto the International Women’s Day website for more ideas.”

Those looking to show their support can cross their arms and strike the IWS 2022 pose and share using #BreakTheBias image, video, resources, presentation or articles on social media using #IWD2022 #BreakTheBias to encourage further people to commit to helping forge an inclusive world.
