City Youth Advisory Council hosting virtual financial education session Sunday

Mar 14, 2022 | 1:34 PM

Budgeting, saving, credit, loans, and investments will be the topics addressed in a virtual education session held on March 20 by the City of Grande Prairie’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC).

The session is being hosted in partnership with the organization called The Debtless Students. This organization’s goal is to help teach teenagers and post-secondary students about financial education and prepare for financial stability.

Community Development Coordinator for the City of Grande Prairie Nicole Hornett says these sessions will be intended for those between ages 14-24.

“They (the YAC) were chatting about some of the topics youth are interested in and what they wanted to learn more about,” she explained.

“Financial education came up as one of the topics, so they went ahead and just started planning.”

After several conversations between the YAC, members Grace Larson and Avalon Heeemskerk reached out to the organization The Debtless Students to see if there was a way they could help youth in the area expand their knowledge and learn about future financial stability.

Hornett says there is a net connection between the youth council in Grande Prairie and The Debtless Students as the organization was founded by former council member Shubh Patel.

She tells EverythingGP, the first virtual session they will host in partnership with The Debtless Students will focus on financial literacy.

“It’s a one-hour online session where they will cover the basics of budgeting, savings, credit, loans, and investment, so they are starting to introduce youth to those topics,” she explained.

Hornett says if there is a good turnout of youth, more sessions may roll out in the future.

It will take place on Sunday, March 20 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
