Sexsmith Secondary school picks up two gold medals at curling provincials

Mar 15, 2022 | 5:11 PM

The curling teams representing Sexsmith Secondary school made history last week.

At the provincial curling championship in Lethbridge held March 3-5, both the senior boy’s and girl’s teams won a gold medal.

According to a release from the Peace Wapiti Public School Division this is the first time in the history of the provincial curling championship two teams from the same school both won gold.

The teams played against schools from Edmonton and Sherwood Park that have more students enrolled in Grades 10-12 than Sexsmith has for a population.

The senior girl’s team is made up of skip Hayden Young, third Lola Rasi, second Brylee Girard and lead Lexie Collins. They went undefeated throughout the entire tournament.

The boy’s rink is skipped by Kayne Young and also includes third Garrett Ewan, second Bryce Bogdanek and lead Gavin Skarberg. They went 3-1 in round robin play and defeated the undefeated team from McNalley in Edmonton twice to win the gold medal.

This title can be described as a special one for the boy’s team as they have been curling together since Grade 4. This was the last time they will be able to compete as a team competitively.
