Lethbridge students challenged to design new west side school using Minecraft

Mar 16, 2022 | 10:29 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – If your child is an avid Minecraft player, they can put the countless hours they have sunk into the game to good use.

The Lethbridge School Division (LSD) is challenging its students to build the currently-unnamed K-5 school in the Garry Station area in West Lethbridge utilizing the Minecraft: Education Edition platform.

The school board has designed a real-world model of the area using satellite data. Students and teachers can download the world and build a school in Minecraft: Education Edition.

The school will need to hold approximately 600 students and include a gymnasium, food services area, main office, 12-16 classrooms, an art room/band room/theatre, science lab(s), stairwells, elevators, washrooms, staff room, and learning commons.

Items such as playgrounds, landscaping, a school name, custodian spaces, and a mascot are optional but can help in the event of a tie-breaker.

LSD said there will be prizes for the winner, but the prizes were not specified.

All entries must be submitted by May 31, 2022.

A training day will be provided for those who are not familiar with the platform or need more support on March 30, 2022, at 3:45 pm. More details on the competition and how to register for the training session are on the Lethbridge School Division website.
