ROCKY VIEW COUNTY, AB – One of the world’s largest retailers has announced a new investment in Alberta.

Walmart Canada will spend $118 million to create a 430,000 square foot sortable fulfillment centre in Rocky View County.

President and CEO Horacio Barbeito says the facility will serve as the company’s shipping hub in Western Canada.

“This modern facility will provide our associates with the latest logistics technology to improve our supply chain. That means more products available, more orders fulfilled and more Canadians offered two-day shipping. This is how we’re transforming our operations to meet the needs of Albertans and all Canadians.”

The fulfillment centre will be able to ship 20 million units annually. Walmart hopes to offer two-day shipping to 61 per cent of Canadians.

In addition to construction jobs, Walmart estimates that 325 permanent positions will be created.

Premier Jason Kenney believes it is another indication that Alberta is open for business.

“Alberta is proud to welcome more investment to our province: we have the space, the people, and the competitive advantage to attract major companies like Walmart to build and expand here. Walmart’s choice to serve their Western Canadian customers from the Calgary area is another signal to the world that our province is coming back, stronger than ever.”

Barbeito says “innovative technology” that will be deployed at the fulfillment centre will help their associates to do their jobs better, not to replace jobs.

It is slated to open in September 2022.
