Number of flights out of Grande Prairie airport expected to start increasing over coming weeks

Mar 24, 2022 | 11:11 AM

It looks like business will be picking up again soon at the Grande Prairie Airport.

Todd Carter, the airport’s director of operations says early indications are that their number of scheduled commercial flights will start to increase in April – from their current level of three flights a day, to eventually hitting 10 flights per day during the summer months.

“We are continuing to work with trying to get a weekday (direct) service to Edmonton, with announcements hopefully anticipated very shortly,” he explained.

“We have also had signals here from Flair Airlines of a return to the Grande Prairie Airport for summer service to Vancouver.”

Carter adds the 10 flights per day would return the airport to very close to pre-COVID-19 pandemic travel levels.

“There are rumours out there of (plane and staff) shortages and those kinds of things,” he said. “But we are hopeful that everything can return to what it was pre-COVID”.

Carter feels the April 1st removal of fully vaccinated travellers needing to provide a negative test result before they can fly will have a positive impact on traffic at the airport.

“I believe that it is going to start increasing traffic. The less that those requirements and those mandates restrict people, the better. They are going to want to get out and do some travelling.”

Carter adds having the flexibility once again of flying directly to either Edmonton or Calgary will be good for air travel in the region.
