GP Grows returning for third year

Apr 9, 2022 | 6:00 AM

As part of the City of Grande Prairie’s Earth Day celebrations, it will also be celebrating the third year of the GP Grows program.

This year’s Earth Day celebrations will be taking part at the Montrose Cultural Centre on April 22.

With the city launching the GP Grows program for its third consecutive year, Environmental Outreach Specialist Jessica Foley says they have decided to change things up a bit to get more people growing vegetables at home.

“We’re going to be setting up a seed bar where residents are encouraged to come out to Earth Day and build their own seed kits. They can choose sunflowers, oregano, tomatoes and choose what they want to grow.”

Residents will be able to choose from 13 different seed varieties which they can take home to help grow their garden for the year.

Foley says this program is completely free for anyone wanting to create a garden this summer.

“The goal for GP Grows is always just to be able to connect with residence to show them that they can be growing these things in their backyard, even if you don’t have a lot of space,” she explained.

“We want to show you that you can grow your own vegetables on your windowsills. We want to be able to connect you with the tools and resources so you can have a successful garden you can harvest from.”

Foley added they will also help assist residents with any questions they might have.

The seed bar is only on Earth Day and runs from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m.
