Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival ready for in-person return

Apr 19, 2022 | 2:17 PM

The Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival is returning to the Swan City April 22-24.

This year’s edition of the three-day festival will take place at the St. John Paul II Performing Arts Theatre and will feature various different film genres focusing on the outdoors.

Originally, the festival was slated to be held in mid-January at the Northwestern Polytechnic Theatre, but it was forced to be postponed because of COVID-19 concerns.

Due to scheduling conflicts, the festival was forced to move to a different location.

Festival co-host Gio Rawlins tells EverythingGP organizers are excited to finally be back in person this year.

“COVID has certainly thrown a wrench into everyone’s lives, but we’re excited that things are calming down a little bit,’ he said.

“Restrictions have been loosened and we’re very excited to get back into a theatre and share these wonderful films with our audience here in Grande Prairie.”

Rawlins adds there will be a film for everyone at this year’s festival.

“It’s a curated mix of all sorts of genres from environmental mountaineering, skiing, snowboarding, boy we’ve got a collection of film this year that should suit everyone’s tastes and excitement levels.”

Rawlins says this festival isn’t just about celebrating the amazing work created by filmmakers from across the globe, but also is an opportunity for them to raise money for the Wapiti Nordic Ski Club.

“This has always been our major fundraiser for the Wapiti Nordic Ski Club. This is the one that helps fund all of our programs, keep the lights and heat on inside the clubhouse.”

“Hopefully, we’re presenting a program with a fair enough price point that people are more than happy to come out and support the local club.”

This is the 23rd time the festival has been held in Grande Prairie.

You can purchase tickets by contacting the Grande Prairie Live Theatre. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door.
