The Alberta governments Civil Society Fund has granted Grande Prairie’s Centre for Young Parents (previously Society for Support to Pregnant and Parenting Teens) $152,796 to move forward with a social enterprise project.

A thrift shop has been in conversation for the past two years according to the Executive Director at CYP Shauna Livesey.

“The last eight or nine months we really starting putting a lot of work and thought into how this could become a reality and how it could not only benefit us but others in the community.”

With a handful of other thrift and secondhand stores in the community Livesey says this one will have a big disparity compared to others.

“The difference that sets us apart is the non-profit and really giving back to the community, with all of the funds staying here in Grande Prairie and area.”

The space for the planned thrift shop is in the process of being secured partnering with non-profit organization.

Livesey says the CYP offers numerous programs such as a free food pantry, donation room, free childcare, parenting support and education, mental health counselling, pre and postnatal care, grief support groups, options counselling, economic advancement program, empowering parents program and free transportation to appointments, school, and the centre.

“Our donation room is open to the public as well, it’s not just for the families we serve in the centre but open for everyone.”

The provinces Civil Society Fund is funding 37 projects across Alberta to help organizations supporting Albertans address a range of social issues such as mental health, homelessness, domestic violence and others.
